I remember when Ben Harper’s first record came out thinking that this was a talented guy who was on to something different. He was playing rootsy slide guitar music, but taking it somewhere different, somewhere pop and cool.

It was good, right? 'nuff said. And how on earth could you not mention John Paul Jones sitting in on Dazed & Confused? That was just huge. The sound system roared and the performance was transcendant. Everyone around me was blown away...sorry you missed it.

Too smooth, too calculated

I couldn't agree more with Pablo's comment above. Ben Harper is a superstar, and his production showcases that. I agree that the performance was smooth, but 'Dazed and Confused' was easily my favorite experience of an incredible day of music at the Roo.

Too smooth, too calculated

WOW.....you are the exact reason MSNBC shouldn't even be covering music festivals and if all you could dig up from a great Ben Harper show is a week comparison to Kravitz (love to see him play Burn one Down) you and your band are weak at best (don't expect to be playing Roo, ever). Come on any music enthusiast would have only one critism of the Ben Harper show....why play Dazed and Conf. again...we saw a 25 min version the night before, play a different Zep song just for variety...we all know Ben can play 'em! Love the Roo!

Too smooth, too calculated

This is the greatest music review I have ever read. Extremely entertaining and insightful as I agreed with so much of what he says. Hey Matt dont rip on his band. By doing that you are saying you cant be in a band and review music at the same time. Otherwise anyone in his shoes would be terrified of a juvenile attack as yours. Burn one down, oh boy. The Kravitz comment is dead on unto Kravitz himself, but Bens later albums have diminished and he is one hell of a guitar player. There is something to be said about being too polished also. Good to see different rock bands at bonarroo, not just noodling guitar.

Too smooth, too calculated

i don't see how ben's talent & presence could ever be missed or reviewed in this way. he is a talented, moving, & amazing musician, as well as person; words lack the definition of his character. i first saw ben play in a ballroom with only 97 unknowing fans ~ and whether the numbers are few or 97,000, the shows have been just as beautiful as that first.
